What does a chicken sandwich have to do with Jesus? Gay students on a few college campuses apparently believe Chick-fil-A, the second largest quick-service chicken restaurant chain in the United States, is serving up a lot more than waffle fries with their sandwiches.
Gay students at some universities, along with a Georgia-based lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) advocacy group, are petitioning their schools to drop Chick-fil-A as weekly food vendors -- because the restaurant chain openly promotes traditional marriage and other Christian values.
The initial uproar began when a local Pennsylvania Chick-fil-A restaurant agreed to provide free sandwiches to a marriage workshop that did not support same-sex marriage. The local restaurant eventually withdrew its support of the seminar, and Chick-fil-A President and CEO Dan Cathy posted a video on Facebook to address the concerns.
Cathy explains in the video, "Providing sandwiches and brownies for a local seminar is not an endorsement or a political stance." He also adds that marriage has long been a focus of Chick-fil-A, which his father, S. Truett Cathy, started in 1967.
Since its inception, the chicken mega-chain has made its Christian underpinnings no secret, and as such, continues to openly support other like-minded organizations, individuals and groups. Nicknamed "Jesus chicken" by some in the secular community, the privately held restaurant chain is closed on Sundays andattributes much of its success to treating every customer with "genuine hospitality."
