Namdaemun (南大門) or Sungnyemun

The famous Great Southern Gate

I didn't take this photo. It's from 2002.

Nam·dae·mun or the "Great Southern Gate" [남대문/南大門] is also called Sung·nye·mun or "The Gate of Exalted Ceremony" [숭례/崇禮門]. It was built in 1398. This gate was set on fire in 2008 by an crazy arsonist. It was a day of mourning for all Koreans, who watched one of their most famous historic sights burn down. This gate is currently being restored, I couldn't see much of it. But I still walked around in the area and took some photos. Have a look here:

Photos of Namdaemun on the temporary fence around the restoration site.

The fire and its aftermath. Namdaemun burned on Feb 10, 2008. A sad day for Korea.

The restoration site as it is today, April 2010.

Not everyone is rich in South Korea.
