'Joy Division' Film Brings Praise at Cannes

A British movie about 80's alternative band, Joy Division singer Ian Curtis, opened the 60th Cannes Film Festival's Director's Fortnight and has received a warm reception.

'Control' is based on the life of Ian Curtis who committed suicide at the tender age of 23 by hanging. His role was played by newcomer Sam Riley. Riley said he was "working in a warehouse in Leeds folding shirts" when he was cast for the role.

Film director Anton Corbijn said the fresh face had brought "an innocence and freshness that I was hoping for but never thought I would find".

"This is a very hard role for anybody to play, because it is very hard to fit in somebody's shoes who has become an icon in many people's eyes."

"I can't think of the movie without Sam, to be very honest - I think he gave everything to that role.

"It was his first film, it was my first film - in a way we had nothing to lose."

The story describes Curtis' short life, his struggle with epilepsy, and his love for his wife and a Belgian mistress he meets while on tour.

Riley said his research for the role of Ian Curtis involved studying epilepsy and it's effects, as well as watching hours of footage of Curtis's live performances.

"I spent a lot of time in the mirror doing dance moves. I tried to play him as fairly normal bloke, with an exceptional talent.

"He was an incredibly enigmatic performer..unusual, and uncomfortable in a way. And a fantastic lyricist for his age, for any age."

The surviving members of Joy Division, who soon after Curtis' death formed the hugely successful 'New Order', have seen the movie and according to Corbijn, they all loved it.

"They hardly ever agree on anything together, but they have agreed that they all love the film."

Mike Tyson's Life Story Topic of New Documentary

Director James Toback is set to turn Mike Tyson's life into a documentary.

'Tyson' will be based on over 30 hours of interview footage filmed by Tobak, that include Tyson's thoughts and comments on many subjects.

Toback says he decided to make the film after being fascinated by Tyson and his legacy for many years. He first met Tyson in 1985 when Tyson was only 19.

The director told Daily Variety, "The point (of the film) is not to polish his (Tyson) image or make a cinematic apology, but rather to get a firsthand look at a very complex and epic story."

New Indie Film on the Life of Alexis Arquette

You may remember Alexis Arquette, brother of Patricia, David and Rosanna, on VH1's, 'The Surreal Life', or maybe as the wedding singer who resembled Boy George in 'The Wedding Singer'.

Alexis, 38, is a transsexual and a feisty one at that. I love Alexis and was excited to hear that (s)he is the focus of 'Alexis Arquette: She's My Brother,' an A&E Indie Film which makes its world premiere Monday at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York.

At about the age of 30, Alexis (real name Robert) began living life as a female.

"I'm a man, but I'm also a transsexual, which means I am also part woman," says Alexis. "Got news for you -- it's not rocket science, people."

Alexis talked about his family and whether they accept him as a sister and a daughter. "I see them wanting to make it okay for me, but I don't know, will they ever see me as a sister? I hope so. I mean, I think it's difficult for them. I think they do see me as flawed; I do think they do think I'm damaged goods, in a way."


But she insists that she has the support of the entire Arquette family.

"We love our brother," says Rosanna. "If he wants to be our sister, we are happy for him. Whatever he wants."

Ed Norton to Play 'Incredible Hulk'

Norton is set to play The Incredible Hulk

Norton will take over the role from Eric Bana.

The latest version of the Hulk will be less serious than the last and more like the comic book hero, according to Marvel. The movie's plot will be based on on Bruce Banner, the Hulk's human half, and his efforts to cure the condition which transforms him into the green monster.

Co-producer Kevin Feige said the film would be "a fun, high-octane event", adding "we could not be more excited about this project".

Spicy is not a big fan of Marvel Comics movies, but I will say that any movie with Ed Norton in it is a movie I'll watch.

She'll be partying for there for the next 10 days and then she'll head out to film her new movie, 'Hippy' in the UK.

'Hippy' is about a bunch of teens who take a cross country trip together then one of them drops acid and goes on a killing rampage.

Will Ferrell Movie Needs 500 Extras

How would you like to be in a movie with Will Ferrell and Woody Harrelson?

Up to 500 extras for "Semi-Pro," the Will Ferrell comedy about a 1970's pro basketball team in Flint, will be hired for upcoming filming in Flint and Detroit.

"We're looking for a variety of people for the most part," said Wendy Washbrook, extras casting director for the Michigan locations. "Just normal people who want to come and work with us and dress in 1970's costumes, or wear a wig and sideburns."

Applicants for the paid jobs should mail submissions as soon as possible, Washbrook said.

Submissions should include:

A current photograph, name, mailing address, e-mail address, phone number, date of birth (if a minor), height, weight and clothing sizes. Applicants with cars can supply makes, models and years.

The "Semi-Pro" crew has been shooting in Los Angeles since mid-February. Filming is slated to move to Michigan for the last week of April and first week of May.

"I love working out of town," said Washbrook, a Los Angeles -based freelance casting director since 1994. "People aren't used to being extras, and it's more exciting for people who haven't done that before."

Washbrook said she will begin selecting extras from the applications as early as the end of next week. Extras will hired mainly on a day-to-day basis, but Washbrook said Friday she did not yet have production dates or locations.

Most of the scenes to be filmed in Michigan will be exterior shots, Washbrook said.

Ferrell stars as Jackie Moon, owner, coach and player on the Flint Tropics, a struggling team in the outlaw American Basketball Association in 1976. Woody Harrelson, Andre Benjamin and Maura Tierney also are in the New LIne Cinema production for director Kent Alterman.

"We'll be trying to look like it's 1976 in Flint," Washbrook said.

Rob Zombie's 'Halloween' Remake Trailer

Rob Zombie is only months away from releasing his much-anticipated version of the 1978 classic, Halloween.

The official release date is August 31, 2007.

MTV asked Zombie,
"Talk about the plot of John Carpenter's 1978 classic versus the plot of your "re-imagining."

Zombie: "The plot is so simple [in the original]; it's this young kid Michael Myers," said Zombie. "We've changed it a bit - in the original, he kills his sister; then he's sent to Smith's Grove Sanitarium, which he later escapes from as an adult; comes home and starts randomly killing babysitters. Later, in sequels, they made [his back story] more significant - but in the first one, it's pretty random ... I've added a lot more to it, and I've tried to make everything he did be motivated and justified in some way, so it's never random killing for no reason. There's a reason for everything."

Mel Gibson Causes Uproar at Cal State

TMZ has learned Mel Gibson exploded in anger last night on a college campus after an expert on Mayan culture accussed him of racially stereotyping the Mayans in the movie "Apocalypto."

It happened last night at Cal State University at Northridge in the San Fernando Valley. Gibson was speaking to a film class about his movies, and several members of the Mayan community came to hear the famous director.

After Gibson's presentation, the crowd was allowed to ask questions. Alicia Estrada, an Assistant Professor of Central American Studies at CSUN, challenged Gibson, asking him if he had read about the Mayan culture before shooting the controversial film. Gibson said he had. Estrada persisted, stating that representations in the movie that the Mayans engaged in sacrificial ceremonies and had bloodthirsty tendencies were both wrong and racist.

Estrada and others tell TMZ that Gibson exploded in anger, responding, "Lady, Fuck off."

We're told Gibson also became extremely angry when members of the Mayan community protested on how they were portrayed in the film. The emotional Mayan members were escorted out of the room, and we're told Gibson screamed a parting shot -- "Make your own movie!"

Rob Schneider and Adam Sandler: Together Again

Rob Schneider and Adam Sandler might be starring aside one another in yet another comedy.

Schneider and Sandler are currently working out the details of Schneider's role in Sandler's new comedy, "You Don't Mess With the Zohan."

Sandler plays a a Mossad agent who fakes his death so he can move to New York and become a hair stylist. Schneider's character is described as an East Yistannen cab driver.

The friends have been in many movies together such as Click, The Waterboy, 50 First Dates, Little Nicky, Eight Crazy Nights, The Longest Yard, and Big Daddy - just to name a few.

Shooting begins this summer in L.A. and New York and should be released during the summer of 2008.

Spicy Movie Review: 'Man About Town'

Man About Town is a movie about a Hollywood Agent, Jack Giamoro (Ben Affleck) who feels he has lost his edge. And with good reason.

He's failed to sign one of the biggest names in Hollywood, his ailing father has moved in with him, his marriage is in shambles, and he suspects (correctly) that his wife may be having an affair.

Jack takes a course in journal writing to help him clear his mind and discover just what it is in life that he really wants. At first he takes the course with a grain of salt, afraid his colleagues will mock him if they found out. As the class progresses his journal starts to take form and his ideas, secrets and feelings flow.

That's where the nettled reporter (Bai Ling) comes in. Revenge is on her mind after Jack never contacts her regarding screenplays she had sent to him. She decides to ruin him with an expose, and of course, gets ahold of the journal and all of Giamoro's secrets.

As they say when it rains it pours, and it's also about this same time that Jack find's out that his wife is indeed cheating on him...with his top client.

Man About Town is a good movie, but by no means is it a great movie. Bai Ling had the most entertaining role as the bitter reporter/screenwriter. While Ben Affleck's character was just plain boring. All I could think about after his wife admitted to him sorrowfully that she had an affair was 'Why would she even be interested in this guy?'

All in all I think the plot in this movie was weak, and you couldn't relate to the characters whatsoever. If substance is what you are looking for you won't find it here.

Would I recommend this movie? Sure, if there is nothing better on, or you are watching it on someone else's dime.

Milli Vanilli Get Their Own Movie

According to Variety magazine, a movie about the publicly humiliated pop group of the 80's will be underway soon.

Universal Pictures is working on a film about Fabrice Morvan and Rob Pilatus of the group Milli Vanilli.

Milli Vanilli won a 'Best New Artist' Grammy in 1990 but had the award revoked after it was discovered that it was all a sham. The two shoulder pad & spandex wearing men were not the actual singers of the group. They performed to audiences using prerecorded material which was all fine until one day the music skipped.

I never understood why the men who actually sang on the album didn't get the Grammy Award in place of the deceptive duo that previously took center stage.

Jeff Nathanson, who wrote Catch Me If You Can starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks, will also write the motion picture about Milli Vanilli.

Says Nathanson about the project, "I've always been fascinated by the notion of fakes and frauds, and in this case, you had guys who pulled off the ultimate con, selling 30 million singles and 11 million albums and then becoming the biggest laughing-stocks of pop entertainment."
